Our story

We fell hard for Japan. Then realized: the gatekeeping had to stop.

Yen Wanders started as a Google Doc shared between friends in 2023 — a brain-dump after our first Japan trip went over budget by 40% because no one had explained the small things: that Shinkansen tickets cost more if you book them wrong, that an eSIM is non-negotiable, that capsule hotels are genuinely lovely.

That doc kept getting forwarded. Then translated. Then printed. Eventually we built it into something more useful — and named it Yen Wanders.

Today we're a small team of repeat Japan travelers, sharing the no-bullshit playbook we wish we'd had on trip #1. Everything is field-tested. Every affiliate link is something we'd book ourselves. Every budget number comes from real receipts.

If we don't help you save more than this site ever earns from you, we've failed.
