7 Things I Wish I Knew Before My First Trip to Japan

Japan rewards travelers who prepare. Here are the seven lessons we learned the hard way on our first visit.

First, cash matters more than you think. Even in 2026, plenty of small restaurants, shrines, and rural ryokan still refuse cards. Always have ¥20,000+ on hand.

Second, an eSIM is non-negotiable. Free hotel Wi-Fi exists, but you will need maps and translation everywhere outside it. Buy an Airalo or Ubigi eSIM before you fly.

Third, the JR Pass is only worth it if youre traveling between 3+ cities. For Tokyo + Kyoto only, just buy individual Shinkansen tickets — its cheaper.

Fourth, learn five phrases. Sumimasen, arigatou gozaimasu, eigo daijoubu desu ka, kore kudasai, oishii. Thats it. People will love you.

Fifth, convenience stores are not gas stations. 7-Eleven, FamilyMart and Lawson serve fresh, high-quality meals for $4-7. Locals eat here daily.

Sixth, shoes off. Always. In homes, ryokan, temples, even some restaurants. Wear easy-on slip-ons.

Seventh, dont tip. Its genuinely confusing or insulting in most contexts. The service is included in the price.
