The Real Cost of Cherry Blossom Season (And Why You Should Skip It)
Late March in Japan is magical — and 2x the price. Here are the equally beautiful windows nobody talks about.

Sakura season is unforgettable. Its also extortionate.
Hotel rates in Kyoto can triple between March 25 and April 8. Flights from the US/UK get 40-60% pricier. Kiyomizu-dera at sunset is mobbed shoulder-to-shoulder.
The alternative? Plum blossoms in late February. Or autumn foliage in mid-November — arguably more colorful and 50% cheaper.
Why autumn wins: Crisp weather (10-18°C), red maples at Tofuku-ji and Eikan-do, hot onsen towns at peak appeal, smaller crowds.
If you must go in sakura season, target the first week of April in Tohoku (Hirosaki Castle) instead of Kyoto.
