Tokyo on $80 a Day: A Real Itinerary, Not a Fantasy
Yes, Tokyo can be affordable. Here is exactly how we did 5 days on a tight budget without skipping the good stuff.

Tokyos budget reputation is mostly outdated. Stay in Asakusa or Ueno, eat at conveyor-belt sushi spots, walk between neighborhoods.
Accommodation: We booked a clean business hotel for $42/night near Ueno station. Capsule hotels go even lower — APA, Nine Hours, First Cabin chains are great.
Food: Breakfast at FamilyMart ($4), lunch at standing soba ($6), dinner at Sukiya or Yoshinoya ($7-9). For one splurge meal, hit a kaiten-zushi like Sushiro for $20 total.
Transport: A 24-hour Tokyo Metro pass is ¥800 (~$5). Walk Asakusa→Ueno→Akihabara to save more.
Free highlights: Meiji Shrine, Shibuya Crossing, Shinjuku Gyoen (¥500), Tsukiji Outer Market, Yoyogi Park, every department store basement.
The math: 5 days × $80 = $400 in-country, before flights. Doable.
